The paper discusses the central pattern decorating the Campanopetra Basilica in Salamis. The central medallion (also named as “shield pattern”) in polychrome opus sectile resembles a flower with 12 petals. The pattern can also be read as overlapping fish-scales motifs, starting from the centre of the medallion and extending outwards. This formation can also be gained through mathematical formulas and is called “hyperpolar transformation” in maths. This shows the great mastership of the mosaic artists of Antiquity. |
