This article publishes the archaeological excavations at the Manson of the Counts of Castelo Melhor or “Paço dos Vasconcelos”, locally called “castelo” of Santiago da Guarda (Ansião Municipality) carried out between May 2002 and July 2004. The excavations revealed the pars urbana of a late roman villa of the IV/V centuries AD, centered on a peristyle and a small atrium. Ten mosaic pavements of great aesthetic value were found within the room walls with remains of mural paintings. The building was object of remodelling during the occupation period and served, when abandoned, as a foundation to the XVI AD monument. Attention was capted by a roman intact iron window grid, which allowed to determine the embrasure dimensions. (Résumé auteur) |
