The dominating mosaic of palace I in Gamzigrad is a panel with the presentation of Dionysus from the great triclinium - hall in the northern part of the palace (hall G). The panel (2,47 x 1,55 m) depicts a young god sitting, with a leopard beside his feet watching him peacefully, image following Hellenistic models (Pella, Delos). Parallels can be drawn with the presentations of Aion in Arles and of Narcissus (Syrian influence) from Daphne, near Antioch : the Gamzigrad image is closer to eastern, Syrian influences. |
