The paper presents three mosaics from Edessa which are currently preserved at Şanliurfa Museum. They derive from tombs with arcosolia. Mosaic nr. 1 depicts a funeral ceremony in the region. The honourable and self-confident expression of the woman shows the importance of women in the region. Mosaic nr. 2 is decorated with four pointed stars and bears an inscription in Estrangelo Syriac, a kind of Aramaic. Mosaic nr. 3 depicts both domestic and wild animals together and has Persian influence. Specific characteristics of Edessa mosaics can be summarized as serious expressions, big eyes, coarse drawing lines, white background and lack of fill motifs. There are also decorative elements common with Roman mosaics. |
