This article studies the personifications of the Four Seasons in the late-antique mosaics of the Oriental part of the Mediterranean basin (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan), with a description and an analysis of the iconographical topos they generally follow and its variations. Putting back the Seasons in context, we may review different meanings and symbolic value they can take – or not, if we consider that the choice of this iconographical topos could simply come from a material requirement: the convenience of having four Seasons in the four corners of a room. The article concludes with an analysis of the iconographical program of the mosaic now known as the Room of Hippolytus Mosaic at Madaba (6th c. A.D.). (Excerpt from the author’s abstract.) |
