The article analyzes account of genre scenes that include depictions of camel caravans and trade in exotic animals in mosaic pavements. These images, typical of several churches in the area of Jordan, raise questions about their special nature. An accurate study of historical and iconographic sources is provided and suggests that most of these scenes were commissioned by private donors who actually practiced this trade for a living and by offering them sought the protection of Holy powers. |
