The author argues that certain motifs in mosaics suggest representations of indoor gardens, symbolically extending the garden into the house. Key elements are water, flora and fauna, and canthari. The main mosaics she discusses are from Kingscote and Woodchester (Great Britain); Lerida and Ramalete (Spain); the Maison du Cratère and House of Nicentius at Thuburbo Majus (Tunisia); and the House of the Fountains at Conimbriga (Portugal). |
