The paper studies the production of mosaics based on application procedures and recurring inlay-patterns. It focuses on the order of production and presents two applications, namely the illusionistic overlapping and internal division. The application of these methods is illustrated with three case studies from Jordan, Israel and Turkey. This method can be applied in order to identify the mosaic craftsman and shed new light on understanding the organisation of ancient mosaic workshops. (Excerpt from the author’s abstract.) |
