A catalogue of the recently formed museum at Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes) includes an essay on a group of mosaics acquired for the collection. These consist of six panels: (1) a plait pattern formed of interlocking bands of guilloche, with floral motifs in the interstices; (2) a vine-scroll containing baskets of grapes; (3) a series of dolphins arranged to form a sinusoidal pattern; (4, 5) two panels with a head of Medusa set at the centre of a polychrome radiating 'shield' motif; (6) a black-ground border with an acanthus scroll populated by deer and a Cupid moving towards a corner-head of a Season (?). |
