In 2007, a preventive excavation in Jean-Jaures Avenue unearthed one of the largest houses of the antique city of Nîmes (France). The two main rooms’ floor decoration (Pentheus’ death, Achilleus on Scyros), which refers to Greek theatre, reflects the culture of a member of the local elite as well as the vitality of the district during the second century A.D. This paper proposes to place the pavements in the context of Nîmes, describes them and considers each dating element available. (Author’s abstract.) |
