The author presents a new interpretation of the theme of the drunkenness of Heracles with particular reference to the mosaics from Sepphoris and Sheikh Zouede. She argues that the role of Heracles was not to provide a contrast with Dionysus but as an initiate who, through intoxication, could envision the god. The ‘drinking contest’ is interpreted not as a contest but as Heracles’s transition to maturity through his apotheosis: he is regarded as a follower of Dionysus and not a rival. |
