A fragment of a floor mosaic discovered in Dor (ancient Dora) presents the face of a young man wearing a hat and woolen fillet bound with a blue taenia, depicted against a vegetal and floral background. The specific head was subsequently identified as a mask of a young man from the new comedy and dated to the mid-late 2nd century B.C. In this paper, this identification is reassessed. Based on iconographical and stylistic analysis, the head probably represents a figure connected to the Dionysiac cult and mysteries. (Excerpt from the author’s text.) |
