A discussion of the mosaic, mostly now lost, in Room A of the Terme Marittime at Ostia Antica using photographs taken between 1864 and 1870 as well as later excavation records. The mosaic showed pairs of athletes in different poses, each pair accompanied by a third figure; herms and prize vessels were also depicted. The authors discuss the function of the room as a grand entrance to the swimming pool and explain how the composition addressed the bather as he or she moved through the room. |
