The article reconstructs the commercial activities on the Dead Sea during the Byzantine period through the examination of sailing ships depicted on the Madaba Mosaic Map. These activities are also highlighted in literature and confirmed by archaeological finds, since the Dead Sea was one of the major sources of commercial bitumen in the ancient Near East. The ships of the Madaba Map, according to the author, seem to be of Egyptian origin of the type known as kekouros halegos also employed to transport grain on the Nile. |
