The Roman villa of Abicada is situated in Mexilhoeira Grande (Algarve), Portugal. Discovered in
1938 and classified as a national monument in 1946, this Roman structure shows a very particular architecture, that makes it a touchstone for the study of the Roman villae of Lusitania, most of all from the 3 rd-4th century A.D.
The mosaic pavements of this villa are with one exception still in situ: they show geometric and vegetal patterns and are a valuable point of reference when comparing pavements and identifying schools of mosaicists in this part of the Roman Empire. (D’après le résumé de l’auteur.) |
