Presentation of the author's PhD, to be published as Les Mosaïques romaines en Suisse.
The number of mosaic pavements in the Swiss territory is now one third larger than it was in the corpus established by Mrs. V. von Gonzenbach, Die römischen Mosaiken der Schweiz (1961). The study of the current corpus gives us on the one hand new chronological markers for the stylistic analysis of regional pavements, thanks to the discovery of several mosaics archaeologically dated. On the other hand, it offers new elements of information about the production methods used for making mosaics (leftovers of stone carving…) and a better knowledge of the architectural context surrounding this type of decoration in Roman Helvetia and its border regions. |
