The opus sectile pavement of the katholikon of the monastery of St. George of Lykovouni is a work of fine quality and is preserved almost intact. It is made from multi-coloured marbles taken from the regional quarries, pentelic marble, and yellowish glass crusts. It consists of panels arranged symmetrically to the ground plan of the church, and forming geometric designs, as the theme of the “five loaves”. The quality of the technique can be compared to the opus sectile decoration of the most important middle byzantine monuments (Dormition of the Virgin in Nicaea, St. Sophia of Constantinople, Monastery of Lechova in Corinth, etc). It dates probably to the 11th-12th centuries. |
