Report on the 2006 and 2007 Excavation and Restoration Activities at Tepe Düzen and at Sagalassos

Excavations in the Roman Baths. The floor of Frigidarium 1 is paved with bichrome mosaics. Among the geometric patterns applied are : Quatrefoils forming diamonds, fish-scale pattern and dotted circles. Partial collapse of the vaults over Frigidarium 1 at an earthquake around 540 -620 A.D., probably in 590 A.D. This was followed by a gradual collapse of the remaining part of the building. Excavation in the palatial mansion in the eastern Domestic Area. Several rooms decorated with opus tessellatum mosaics. Rooms XXXV and XVII: Two vestibula leading to a very large hall (Room XXII – dining room?). A large audience hall in the east (Room XLVI), this hall must have had marble clad walls and once possessed an opus sectile floor. An apsidal audience hall (Room L) located at the upper floor of Room XLVI. The polychrome geometrical mosaic floor entirely collapsed. Corridor LVIII running north of the atrium. The walls of this room were decorated with crustae and sham architecture; the floor was paved with a mosaic ‘carpet’ in black, white, purple and orange, representing geometric motifs. The pavement of Room LI, situated at the eastern end of Corridor LVIII, was probably orginally decorated with opus sectile. Numerous mosaic fragments in black and white were found within the collapse layers of Room LI. These must have belonged to a richly decorated room on the floor above it (Room LVII). Late 4th-early 5th c. A.D.
