Several pieces of cut stone recovered in excavations between 1967 and 1979, and thereafter stored at Littlecote (Wiltshire), are identified as coming from a pavement, or part of a pavement, of opus sectile. Shapes comprise triangles, trapezes, lozenges, oblongs and squares. Most of the pieces are of bluish-grey limestone, but there are also elements of red terracotta and white chalk which would have enlivened the geometric pattern. The author reviews the sparse evidence for other sectile pavements in Britain. |
