The paper deals with a unique mosaic fragment, found during the archaeological excavations of the site in 2000 and dated to the mid- or late 2nd century B.C. It depicts a head within a garland, probably part of a decorative border for a central emblema. On the basis of literary sources, iconographic and stylistic analysis, as well as comparative examples (does the head illustrate a mask, or a depiction of the god Dionysos?), the author comes to the conclusion that the head represents the god Dionysos. |
