The book is in thirteen parts, each discussing a different aspect of the subject: the origins and evolution of mosaic; mosaic decoration in the relation to the surface it covers; repertory; mosaic workshops; centres of mosaic production; geographical area; specific period of time, mosaic schools, modern mosaic, materials. Each section is illustrated, which, together with its thematic integrity, makes it possible to read each one separately. Nevertheless there is a common thread that runs through the whole book and links the thirteen parts together, for the content of one is frequently predicated on observations made in others, or else allows a better understanding of them. The detailed general and subject indexes showing the sites of the mosaics mentioned in the book give the reader a better understanding of the texts. The bibliography, offers students and specialists a wide range of questions related to the art of ancient mosaic.
